Do you have more than 1 alarm in your mobile phone?

My student didn't turn up for lessons recently. It's a group session so the lessons went on as usual for the rest. A while later, he texted me, apologised and said that his alarm didn't ring and that's the first time in his life that it happened.

It happened for me as well. Usually about once a year, I'll have screw-ups in my gadgets. I usually set alarms in my phone to wake me up in the morning. Two, in fact, and they are all on snooze. In the past, I like to switch off my phone entirely. Some models allow the alarm function to wake up the phone and automatically switch the phone on by itself so that the alarm can ring (not all models though). So, what happened was that my phone didn't wake up and I couldn't wake for my morning lessons.

It really didn't matter how many alarms you set in one phone. If the alarm in that phone didn't ring for any reasons, it's highly likely that the rest of the alarms in the same phone wouldn't ring as well. So having more alarms in a single phone didn't eliminate the risk of the phone not waking you up. All it did is to reduce the risk of you switching off any alarms by snooze it off without you consciously waking up.

So the trick I came up with is to have another physical alarm, and in conjunction with the alarms in the phone. The event that the alarm going off in both devices are independent and hence I reduced my risk of not waking up on time. And for important events or very early lessons, I always set two alarms in two different devices.

That's just like diversification in different asset class, isn't it?

I have 3 alarms - two are on my phone, on two separate apps, just in case one decided to crash or hang. My third alarm is my wife, heh.

Hi Kevin,

Unfortunately, I serve as the alarm clock for my wife instead :( LOL

Hi LP,

Just 1 reminder alarm. Previously not a single alarm and I did not miss a single event or work. Not have alarm still miss. Last time got good friends to remind and less appts. Now less friends and more appts ... LOL

Hi SI,

Reminder alarm is different lah! Taking about those morning wake up alarms :) If you can wake up without the need for alarm, then I peifu peifu :) I wonder sometimes if it's the dependency of alarms that make us more dependent on alarms.

I mean, in army, when I only have my watch as the alarm (you know, it's soft enough that you only know when you're awake), I can wake up on time everytime. It's about synchronizing your body clock I suppose.

Hi SMOL,

Usually I can do that too, but not during the holidays. Holidays I have to work in the mornings. I seriously wonder if I can take it if I have to follow the majority of pple working at 9 to 6pm :)

I'm quite a night owl HOOT HOOT

Oh that alarm.

I have none. I auto wake up without fail.

Too kAN Chong to have a sound sleep anyway.

Usually if I get a good 7 hour span, I will use one once 40-90 min before the actual time to wake up then it's light sleep.

Hi SI,

You're a light sleeper, haha! Same as me..I super light sleeper. So an alarm usually does minimal work. I sometimes wake up before the alarm even rings...I'm sure you have instances like that :)

Hi LP,

Yes during my exam time I so Kiasu, I have 2 x alarm clock, hp alarm and mum alarm!!!

Nowadays traveling overseas for important meeting, I have hp alarm x 2 timings 10min apart and morning wake up call from Hotel.

Bear in mind also as u aged, sometimes ur body alarm auto wake up. Older u go, lesser u sleep!

Back to diversification, I still think is better for newbie since it allows us to expose to as many different asset class as possible. Then u learn more. Once u are more experienced over yrs then u will start to realize which assets/ stock type suit u better and more comfortable and stick to it.

Hi Rolf,

I agree with you, the more you're exposed to different asset class, the better you know which type is suitable for you. I've dabbled in warrants, stocks, futures and bonds...I realised that bonds and stocks are still more suitable for my life style and personality.

If you don't try, you won't know. Just don't blow up catastrophically, haha!

Hi LP

At some point of time, I debated whether sleep is taking away our precious time away. I always advocate sleep early, wake up early concept, with 7-8 hours of good rest. I actually sleep 到自然醒, which is 4-6am. I set my alarm clock at 6.30am for backup.

I aim to be earlier for most of my work and events, I respected my time to the fullest and I am looking forward to the day when I am totally in control of my time than spending it on earning wages. haha.

Hi Frugal daddy,

I'm the same as you, I prefer to be early for work and events. I respected my time and I expect others not to waste mine too. However, I'm the night version of you lol! I prefer to work later and wake up later. Perhaps it's the nature of my job...I can end work at 10pm, so there's no point waking up at 7am like everyone else when it doesn't make sense to.
