Is it a dream or a goal?

I was reading Tim Ferriss tome "Tools of Titans " and finding little nuggets of information here and there. It was such a great education reading about psychedelics, strength training and ketosis - things that I don't read about in general. This one by the famed wrestler Triple H stood out: Is it a dream or a goal?

A dream is something you fantasize about that will probably not happen. You can dream of being a world class DOTA player or get all As for your exams, but without action, it's just something in the potential near future that might not materialize. A goal is something you set a plan for, so that you can work towards and achieve. In other words, while a goal begins from a dream, the difference that sets them apart is that a dream has no follow up action. In our local parlance, it's just talk cock sing song.

But how does one convert dreams into goals? I think it's important to realise and understand what the cost of that achievement entails. If you want to get As for exam, you have to inch towards your goal. I've a lot of students coming in and telling me they wanted to get A for the subject but their work and attitude is not an A. If you want A, you have to put in A-class work and attitude and that always entails sacrifices. It might mean cutting short on gaming time, or television time or even sleep time, but something has to give in order to generate the extra hours so that you can input it to master your craft. If you want to be a good investor, you can't just play around. You cut short your you-tube time, focus and immerse yourself in that environment. In other words, no great thing can come without jumping deep into the rabbit hole and take whatever suffering you get on the way down.

It's a great question to ask myself if I'm involved or just merely participating.

The problem with Goals is that some people like to shift their Goal posts.

LP,

There's a reason why its written in that sequence:

Transform DREAMS into GOALS through ACTIONS.

Setting financial freedom goals in isolation without linkages to our dreams is what those who have hit their financial goals often ask, "Now what?"

Hence the shifting of the goal posts as figuring what we really want is HARD...

Many are not familiar with defining their dreams. They have little practice in this area. Goals are much easier since anyone and everyone can do it!

But if we practice turning our dreams into Vision and Mission Statements like used in the Corporate world, that would be a good start.

See? Vision and mission statements are drafted by business owners or Corporate PR agencies ;)

Not everyone can do it now...

How to be as vague as possible but still guide us to True North?

Hi bro8888,

Haha, maybe they are following this: Downgrade your goals into dreams by inaction!

Jokes aside, maybe deep down these are not really their goals but what others are doing. If they really really want it, they will do it.

Hi SMOL,

Nice right? I came up with that soundbite :)

It's true. Some pple are good at dreaming but not good at doing. Some people are good at doing but not good at dreaming. If you meet someone who can dream big and do big, these are the unstoppable people. And the truth is that we all have it inside us to dare to dream big and do big, it's just that we have to find it within ourselves.

I profess I'm not a good dreamer, and I'm still learning how to do it :)

Hi LP,

I have a friend who wants to be a celebrity blogger since.......4 years ago? Don't think he has started his own blog yet.

Okay, bad UN. Shall poke myself. I haven't gotten the grades that I wanted yet. Oops.

Hi UN,

Haha, whoever goes out to blog with the idea of being a celebrity will have a harder journey :) Those bloggers who had been around for as long as I am, are usually those that treat blogging as a hobby. The readers are of course important, but even if there are none, I'm sure they will continue writing, hence it's the journey that counts. If he ever starts one, do let me know :) I'll encourage him haha

As for you, work harder! Or maybe re-evaluate your goals. Maybe it's not what you wanted afterall :)

For me, dreams are high level plans while goals are detailed steps towards a dream
without dream, goals are like ship without a sail
without goals, dream are like ship without a rudder
both are equally important

Hi simplefolk,

Haha, quite a good analogy there :)

Though I never state in the blog article, I agree with you that dreams are equally important. A person with dreams only and no goals is equally as bad as a person with all goals and no dreams! The former has vision but no action, the other has action but no vision!

Thanks for chipping in :)
